MONTREAL – August 16, 2022 – The first edition of Mila’s Robotics Summer School, organized in collaboration with Ahead.IO Labs Inc., an innovation studio based in Vancouver, will take place from August 22 to 25, 2022 in Montreal.
The program will combine lectures on Robotics Software environment, Deep Learning and Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) by leading professors and researchers in the field, with hands-on time to program quadrupeds. The selected group of participating students will work towards one objective: Moving the robots autonomously through an obstacle course.
The program will benefit from Stella, Ahead.IO’s 12 DOF capstan-drive, open, repairable and customizable quadruped robotics platform.
It is now well established that robotics will play a central role in the next industrial revolution, already underway and known as Industry 4.0. The need to expand research in various fields of robotics is crucial, but accessing open robotics platforms proves to be a challenge for universities, researchers, and advanced robotics programs.
“With this event, Ahead.IO Labs Inc. and Mila are laying the foundations towards creating a more open ecosystem of collaboration between industries, universities and researchers for the advancement of robotics,” says Dr. Glen Berseth, Assistant Professor, Université de Montréal, Mila Core Academic Member and Canada CIFAR AI Chair.
“The Robotics Summer School is a great platform for us to connect with and nurture the Canadian robotics ecosystem,” says Alex Santo, CEO of Ahead.IO Labs Inc.“ We are thrilled to be working with Mila and Dr. Glen Berseth on this first edition. We hope this event can help students become well-equipped with the knowledge and expertise to iteratively make robots more useful for day-to-day needs.”
Stella will be powered by the new generation Jetson AGX Orin, the world’s most powerful AI computer for energy-efficient autonomous machines, thanks to the generous donation of Nvidia.
