David Scott Krueger, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research at the Université de Montréal and Core Academic Member at Mila, has been appointed Canada CIFAR Artificial Intelligence Chair.
He will pursue his groundbreaking research addressing crucial issues related to AI alignment, safety, and ethics. In particular, he focuses on alignment failure modes, algorithmic manipulation, interpretability, robustness, as well as understanding the mechanisms of learning and generalization in artificial intelligence systems.
His work contributes to reducing the existential risks posed by AI—including the risk of human extinction—by combining technical research, education, public awareness, governance, and the defense of human rights.
Eight CIFAR Chairs Receive Renewals
CIFAR also confirmed the renewal of eight Mila members’ Canada CIFAR AI Chairs.
This highlights the outstanding work of Aishwarya Agrawal, Christian Gagné, Gauthier Gidel, Eilif Muller, Courtney Paquette, Liam Paull, Siamak Ravanbakhsh and David Rolnick, whose expertise and and contributions to the advancement of artificial intelligence are recognized and celebrated.
The Canada CIFAR AI Chairs program remains a cornerstone of the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy. The program aims to recruit the world’s top AI researchers to Canada, while also supporting talent already based here. It provides affiliated university professors with stable, specialized funding to stimulate cutting-edge research programs and help train the next generation of leaders in artificial intelligence in Canada.
