Cohere partners with Mila to expand research and accelerate accessibility to cutting edge NLP tools

The partnership will further enable organizations to collaborate on NLP research projects to develop the next generation of toolkits and talent.

TORONTO, ONT., June 16, 2022 — Cohere, a leading provider of cutting-edge Natural Language Processing (NLP) models, and Mila, the world’s largest non-profit deep learning (DL) research institute, are pleased to announce a strategic partnership to undertake one of the greatest challenges in artificial intelligence today: harnessing the power of language.

Mila is internationally recognized for its significant contributions to language modeling, machine translation, object recognition and generative models. The collaboration will further strengthen Cohere’s relationship within the research and developer communities, promote its platform and product innovations, and expand access to a growing pool of domestic and global ML talent and exposure to Mila’s latest research findings.

Additionally, by collaborating with Mila’s diverse community of 900 students, professors, researchers, partners and startups, Cohere will learn new perspectives from a variety of peers and discover compelling new use cases for its powerful platform to become the default NLP toolkit for developers and researchers.

“NLP is the next frontier for the next generation of developers and researchers, and alongside Mila’s world-class research community, we’re excited to see what types of ideas will be exchanged and what new discoveries we’ll share,” said Ivan Zhang, Co-founder of Cohere. “The partnership will allow more developers to tap into the power of large language models, unlocking a massive amount of opportunities for research.”

Through its partnership with Cohere, Mila’s researchers will have access to deeper understanding and awareness of the possibilities within NLP for the greater machine learning ecosystem.

“One of the fastest-growing verticals in machine learning is language technology, and we’re eager to work with Cohere as one of the most exciting companies in that cohort.” Stéphane Létourneau, Executive Vice President of Mila. “Together, we share values of building technology that is safe and impartial, and are inspired by the opportunity to innovate responsibly and increase accessibility to new NLP tools.”

Industry collaboration is core to Cohere’s DNA, and the company also calls the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Canadian accelerator Communitech valued partners. This past week, the company launched Cohere for AI, a non-profit research lab committed to meaningful machine learning research through collaboration. “Language presents an enormous opportunity and thought-provoking challenge for the AI community,” stated Aidan Gomez, Co-founder and CEO. “It is the key to elevating what we thought was possible through technology. It’s crucial to support like-minded researchers and work together to build the foundations for the future of artificial intelligence.”
