Yoshua Bengio appointed Scientific Director of MILA – Election of new board members

Montreal, May 16, 2018– MILA -Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Yoshua Bengio as Scientific Director. This appointment confirms the importance of his role to MILA’s development as a catalyst of the strategy to sustain and drive the AI academic research pole and to grow Quebec artificial intelligence ecosystem.

The interim board of directors also elected MILA’s new volunteer board members at its May 14 meeting. The new members are:

  • François Bertrand, Research and Training Director, and Assistant Managing Director, Polytechnique Montréal
  • Pierre Boivin, President and CEO, Claridge Inc. and Chairman of the Board
  • Frédéric Bouchard, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Université de Montréal
  • Benoit Boulet, Associate Dean, Research and Innovation, Faculty of Engineering, McGill University
  • Eugénie Brouillet, Vice-Rector of Research, Creation and Innovation, Université Laval
  • Magaly Charbonneau, Principal and Limited Partner, iNovia Capital
  • Martha Crago, Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation, McGill University
  • Marie-Josée Hébert, Vice-Rector of Research, Discovery, Creation and Innovation, Université de Montréal, Chair of the Governance and Human Resources Committee
  • Anne-Marie Hubert, Associate Director for Quebec, EY Canada, Chair of the Audit Committee
  • Alexandre Le Bouthillier, Founder and COO, Imagia
  • Josée Morin, ASC, Corporate Director
  • Michael Sabia, President and CEO, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec

As MILA’s new leadership, Valérie Pisano, President and CEO, and Yoshua Bengio, Scientific Director, will work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure MILA’s growth mission based on four pillars: training, research, technology transfer and social dialogue.

“Over the next few years, MILA’s sustained momentum will act as a driver of growth for the AI ecosystem as well as Quebec’s economic development. I am convinced that Valérie and Yoshua will help MILA fulfill its aspirations together with the researchers, students, staff, Board members and partners in the Quebec AI ecosystem,” says Pierre Boivin, Chairman of the Board of MILA.
