MONTREAL, QC, February 23, 2022 – Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute today announced a collaboration with Biogen, global biopharmaceutical leader, to drive forward artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) innovation in therapy development. Mila’s renowned expertise in AI/ML, combined with Biogen’s deep R&D knowledge and rich multi-modal datasets in neuroscience, aim to help accelerate and augment the probability of success of therapy development.
The collaboration will enable Mila experts to work closely with Biogen Digital Health—an innovation unit focused on pioneering personalized and digital medicine—and the broader Translational Science ecosystem in Biogen’s R&D organization. Carried out over 3 years, the strategic relationship will focus on investigating how advanced analytics and use of AI/ML can generate novel ways to tackle complex research questions in need of computational methods. This can include, for example, advanced radiomics-based image processing techniques and exploring new methodologies to improve diagnostics and disease prognostication towards predictive enrichment strategies. The overall intent of these efforts would be to increase clinical trial efficiency and probability of success and to get better therapies to patients, faster. This collaboration with Mila illustrates Biogen’s commitment to transforming patients’ lives through personalized and digital medicine.
“At Biogen, we believe that bringing together biology and technology opens many opportunities to augment and accelerate the success of drug development, allowing us to make better informed decisions,” said Priya Singhal, Head of Development at Biogen. “Bringing together our experts and data with the renowned Mila AI specialists will pave new paths forward in R&D innovation.”
"We are delighted that Biogen is joining the Mila community and greatly looking forward to working with this globally renowned biotech pioneer that believes in the importance of technological innovation in R&D. This collaboration is the continued opportunity to bridge the gap between academia and life science industry and create ML-tools with a real-world application to the benefice of the patient and health practitioners.”, stated Stéphane Létourneau, Executive Vice-President of Mila
