Mila, Maya HTT, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster and CSL are excited to bring together industry leaders and academic researchers to tackle critical challenges in Canada's blue economy. This hackathon is a unique opportunity to leverage real-world data for predictive maintenance purposes and serves as a platform to bridge the gap between academic research at Mila and industrial application, offering students a unique opportunity to solve complex, real-world problems.
This event is open to students from the Mila community. If you are a student without any tie to Mila, you have to be referred by a Mila participant. Basic AI knowledge is recommended!

The Challenge
CSL will provide multiple years of telemetry for one vessel. Teams will ingest the historical signals, model the progression of underwater hull fouling, and estimate the optimal moment to trigger cleaning before drag-driven fuel losses outweigh cleaning cost.

FAQ
Who can participate?
All Mila students are welcome to participate. The competition is open to individuals with knowledge or experience in technological solution development, data analysis, programming and other related fields.
If you are not affiliated with Mila, you are welcome to participate, provided you are referred by a Mila student who is a member of your team.
Please note that if you are an industry professional, it is invite only.
All participants must be 18 years and older and reside in Canada. Participants may register individually or as part of a team.
How are teams formed, and who should they include?
Although participants may register individually, all competitors must be part of a team. Individuals who register on their own will be assigned a team based on their experience and expertise.
For those registering as a team, we strongly encourage participants to form multidisciplinary groups, as collaboration across different areas of expertise significantly strengthens the quality and impact of solutions.
Teams must consist of three to five members, and can include participants from the same or different Canadian institutions. Each team is highly recommended to include at least one (1) data scientist, developer, or programmer to ensure sufficient technical capacity.
What tools are needed to compete?
Each participant is responsible for using their own computer, equipped with the hardware and software they deem necessary, along with reliable internet access. The event organizers will provide access to collaborative digital tools, communication platforms, and the core datasets required for the competition.
Do participants have a chance to win prizes?
Yes. By taking part in the hackathon, participants have a chance to win interesting prizes. Stay tuned to know more.
Solutions will be judged by a distinguished panel of AI experts, industry members and academic professors.
All participants will receive a certificate of participation.
Are there any costs associated with registration?
No, registration is free. However, participants must be mindful that spaces are limited and that, should they be selected, they will be expected to actively participate throughout the duration of the competition.
