Politics and responsible AI: Mila’s expertise highlighted at ALL IN 2023
Mila professors Yoshua Bengio, Catherine Régis, David Rolnick and Golnoosh Farnadi shared their insights on AI safety, algorithmic fairness, governance and the use of AI to help tackle environmental issues at ALL IN, an event dedicated to the Canadian artificial intelligence sector.
Hundreds of attendees from academia, business and government gathered at the Palais des Congrès in Montréal on September 27 and 28 for Scale AI’s annual event.
Mila Founder and Scientific Director Yoshua Bengio took this opportunity to have a private discussion on AI safety with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the federal government hopes to advance its AI legislation in the coming months.
He also met with François-Philippe Champagne, Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry and leaders from major Canadian AI companies. They all signed the Voluntary Code of Conduct on the Responsible Development and Management of Advanced Generative AI Systems, a non-binding agreement to improve safety, transparency and accountability in the AI industry.
Several professors also took to the stage to share their insights on the current state of AI, its future, and how to ensure that technological developments benefit everyone.
David Rolnick, Core Academic Member of Mila, presented a keynote on how AI can help solve problems arising from the climate crisis by facilitating the gathering of information, forecasting, modelling and accelerating scientific discovery, especially in the clean technology sector.
Catherine Régis, Associate Academic Member of Mila, participated in a panel discussion to explore which impact generative AI will have on society, how to properly tackle its main issues, and how to ensure a socially beneficial future AI development.
Golnoosh Farnadi, Core Academic Member of Mila, participated in a panel discussion on fairness, equity and diversity in AI, where she shared examples of how issues embedded in AI systems can be fixed, both on a technical and on a human level, and the need to diversify the industry.
Mila Core Academic Member Derek Nowrouzezahrai’s Ubisoft-Mila Industrial research Chair, Scaling Game Worlds With Responsible AI, was also announced during the event. This new project aims to explore the use of data-driven tools to empower digital artists in the video games industry.
