Faculty Positions in AI and Machine Learning – McGill University

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and the School of Computer Science of McGill University, Montreal, invite applications for five tenure-track appointments at all ranks, to begin on August 1st, 2019.

We are searching for candidates with a PhD and expertise in artificial intelligence/machine learning having a strong publication record in top AI/ML journals and conferences and/or related publication venues. The ideal candidates will additionally have expertise in one or more of the following domains:

  • Theoretical Approaches of Artificial Intelligence
  • Computer Platforms, Computer Systems and/or Programming Language Support for AI
  • Machine Learning applied to Computer Vision or Robotics
  • Secure/Private, Robust, and Reliable AI
  • Applications of AI and ML to Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering

The successful candidates will be expected to conduct high-quality research and secure competitive external funding, teach to a diverse and talented student body and provide service to the University, the profession and society at large.

Salary will be negotiable, according to qualifications and experience. Outstanding candidates may be eligible to receive a CIFAR Chair in AI (https://www.cifar.ca/ai/pan-canadian-artificial-intelligence-strategy), depending on their research profile. The successful candidate who satisfies the eligibility conditions of the Canada Research Chair program may be supported by the University for nomination to a Tier 2 Chair which provides protected time for research within a full-time appointment. Successful candidates will be appointed to either the School of Computer Science or the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. Joint appointments to both CS and ECE may be considered. For appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, a first degree in electrical, computer or software engineering is preferred and membership or eligibility for membership in a Canadian professional engineering association is required.

Canada Research Chair

A successful candidate may be supported by the University for nomination to a Tier 2 Chair. Tier 2 Chairs are for emerging researchers (i.e., individuals who are no more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree). Career interruptions (e.g., maternity or parental leave, extended sick leave, family care, etc.) will be taken into consideration using the Tier 2 justification process to review the candidate’s eligibility. Potential applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree with career interruptions may contact the institution to have their eligibility reviewed through the Tier 2 justification process. Note that candidates who do not satisfy the CRC eligibility criteria for a Tier 2 Chair are nonetheless invited to apply for the position

Note also that the Canada Research Chair is also open to internal candidates who already hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at McGill University, are active in the research area described, and contribute to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

For CRC Tier 2 nominees at the rank of Assistant Professor who are within three years of their PhD, one referee must be the PhD supervisor. Internal applicants to the CRC must submit a recent curriculum vitae and a statement of research interests aligned with the designated subject area for the chair.
