Assistant Professor in Robotics – Université de Montréal/Mila

Assistant Professor in Robotics
Department of Computer Science and Operations Research
Faculty of Arts and Science

The Department of Computer Science and Operations Research is seeking applications for a full-time tenure-track position as an assistant professor in robotics and AI. Specific areas of interest in connection with robotics include but are not limited to: control, planning, perception, estimation, human-robot interaction, and embodied machine learning. The appointed candidate will join the Montreal Robotics and Embodied AI Lab (MonREAL) and be given full access to many existing robotics equipment and facilities, but will also help shape the design of a brand new robotics lab that is planned for the new University of Montreal campus MIL. The appointed candidate will also have the possibility to become affiliated with Mila, a world-leading group of deep learning experts, and to apply for a CIFAR AI chair. The position is supported by a large philanthropic donation to the faculty of arts and science and includes generous start-up funding to support the applicant’s research program.

The appointed candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise graduate students, be active in research, publishing, and the diffusion of knowledge, and contribute to the activities of the University.

  • Ph.D. in computer science or in a related field.
  • An excellent publication record in robotics; the candidate should have published in top-tier venues.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high quality university teaching and/or supervision.
  • An adequate knowledge of the French written and spoken language or a strong commitment to mastering the proficiency level required, in accordance to Université de Montréal’s Language Policy. An institutional learning support program is offered to all professors wishing to learn French or improve their communication skills.

About Mila

Mila is the largest academic research group in the area of deep learning, worldwide, bringing together faculty from U. Montréal, McGill U., École Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal. Beyond deep learning, it groups machine learning strengths in reinforcement learning, optimization, graphical models, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, and more. Mila researchers pioneered deep learning more than a decade ago and remain an academic pillar of this approach to artificial intelligence. Mila professors founded the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) and Yoshua Bengio continues to be general chair, after having been program chair and general chair for NIPS (the leading machine learning conference). Mila has been the home of several scientific breakthroughs in deep learning, including neural word embeddings, deep generative models such as GANs and deep auto-encoders, content-based soft-attention (which revolutionized machine translation), showing that ReLUs enable training of deep nets, showing why deep nets can have an exponential statistical advantage, busting the myths about local minima in neural networks, and much more. Mila is being generously funded by governments as well as by industry and philanthropy (with hundreds of millions of dollars having been promised for the next few years).
